Usually, license servers have an internet connection, and a license update is a simple process as described here: Updating a license on a license server.
In certain situations, however, for example in the case of a secured data center, the license server has no direct internet access. Only then, please proceed as follows:
Notes:
If the license container is a USB dongle, we recommend that you temporarily plug it into a computer with an internet connection. Then, on the computer with the internet connection, proceed as described on the following linked page (Updating a license on a license server). After a successful update on that computer, reconnect the USB dongle to the license server without the internet connection.
Only if this procedure is not possible, for instance when using a soft container, you need to update the license in a file-based way and carry out the following steps.
Prerequisites for a file-based license update:
- A current version of the software CodeMeter Runtime Kit is installed on the license server (Setting up a license server).
- A current version of the PTV License Manager (Server) tool is installed on the license server.
- You have access rights to the license server. This can also be done via a remote desktop connection.
- You have a computer with an internet connection to communicate with the PTV server.
- A PTV Vision product or the PTV License Manager (Standard) tool is installed on the computer with the internet connection.
Step 1: Creating a license request file on the license server without an internet connection
1. On the license server without an internet connection, open the License Management window with the standalone PTV License Manager.
2. (1) Click on the CodeMeter Settings symbol to open the configuration. If you do not see this symbol, the installed version is outdated. In that case, please update the application first.
3. In the License container list, select the license container where the license shall be updated, and (2) click the Generate license request/receipt (file-based) symbol.
4. Save the created license request file ...RaC to a folder and transfer it to the computer with an internet connection.
Step 2: Updating the license on the computer with an internet connection
5. On the computer with the internet connection, open the License Management window.
6. Copy the license key received by e-mail to the clipboard.
- Note: The license key has 25 digits.
- Example: 1U2N3-N49LW-IM6EO-6NKWS-Z0QRA
7. In the License Manager, (1) click the Update selected license symbol. Make sure that no license in the list of licenses is selected. You can deselect a license by holding the ctrl key while clicking. Then (2) enter the license key and confirm with OK. On the next screen, (3) select the option On a different computer (file based) and confirm by clicking on (4) Next.
8. When prompted for the dongle serial number enter the serial number of the soft container or USB dongle and proceed with OK. You can find the serial number of a soft container or USB dongle in the license manager. Additionally, the serial number of a USB dongle can also be found on the dongle itself.
9. In the following window, (1) click the Select button in the Step 1 of 2: Upload license request window. Navigate to the license request file ...RaC which you created before and click the Open button. Proceed by (2) clicking on the Next button.
10. In the Step 2 of 2: Transfer License window, click the Open folder button, and copy the license activation file ...RaU back to the license server.
Step 3: Importing the license update to the license server without an internet connection
11. On the license server, (1) go to the CodeMeter settings window and (2) click the Import license update (file-based) symbol.
12. Navigate to the license activation file ...RaU and click the Open button.
13. (1) Click on the CodeMeter Settings symbol to open the configuration.
14. In the License container list, select the desired license container, and (2) click the Generate license request/receipt (file-based) symbol.
15. Save the receipt file to the folder from which the license request file was taken.
16. Transfer the receipt file ...RaC from the license server to the computer with the internet connection and replace the previous license request file there.
Step 4: Confirming the license update on the computer with an internet connection
17. On the computer with the internet connection, in the Step 2 of 2: Transfer License window, (1) select the newly created …RaC receipt file. To complete the process, (2) click the Finish button.
